The Lowdown on Freelancing November 14th, 2008

Working on the Internet can be done from anywhere – from your favorite coffee shop, from home, or even from college. All you need are a few basic programs (like MS Word), a reliable Internet connection and your laptop or desktop.

Many times when looking for freelance work online you’ll see sites that want a bit of money from you to sign up or get work. These sites are often scams, but plenty of them are legitimate avenues for matching up real buyers and providers around the globe. A starter list of sites that do this could read something like: getafreelancer.com, odesk.com, elance.com and guru.com. There are plenty more, but these are probably the most popular ones.

Freelancing normally entails signing up on a website (such as one of the above mentioned), completing your profile, listing your skills etc, and then starting work. This you normally do by ‘bidding’ on projects and if you bid successfully and win the project, then congratulations! You have become a freelancer.

Some sites, in fact most of them, will take a small commission on any project you get, but if you are careful about selecting your buyer and the project, then you will not have to worry about that normally minimal expense. (If it is a large sum then be careful, it may be a scam site.)

There are, of course, both pros and cons to this kind of work (as with any kind of work). But if you are the kind of person who values your home life and your own time, then freelancing may be for you. More often than not, you can negotiate work to do at your own convenience and your own pace, thereby leaving enough leisure time for you to do what you enjoy. There is no ‘boss’ or manager breathing down your neck and you also get to choose the kind of work you want to do. Whether that’s programming, content writing, transcription or web design, you can put any writing or computer skills to good use as a freelancer on the Internet.

There are certain drawbacks as well – which aren’t really drawbacks if you look closely. For one thing you have to learn to focus and manage yourself because there is nobody doing that for you. What this really means is an opportunity for self-development and growth, and learning to take responsibility for yourself which is a skill that can then be applied to any facet of your life. You also need to have very competitive rates as people from all over the world, with different standards of living, are vying for perhaps that same job. This means that often you might be working for less than you know you are worth.

Nonetheless, freelancing is a very rewarding and skill-enhancing way to work and many people make successful careers out of it. Remember, keep communication as a high priority on your list, along with quality work, and you are likely to do very well in a matter of weeks.

Everyone’s Getting Edited November 11th, 2008

Good editors do much more than simply run red lines through your grammar and punctuation. What they do is so vital and so valuable to a writer, that it’s a wonder the editing process ever gets overlooked, which it does all too often.

Good editors read over your writing as though they were everyone in the world reading it – they give you a pre-publishing audience. So if your piece is incoherent in some areas, with missing links and confusing transitions, or just needs better flow, an editor will be able to point that out to you. And a good editor will offer constructive advice and suggestions to improve the writing.

There’s no getting away from it; every writer needs an editor. Whether that editor is you coming back to the piece in a few hours (if it’s a small, light enough piece) or family and friends or a full-blown professional, all writers get their pieces edited. You will often find introductory notes by well-known authors thanking all their friends, family members and professional editors for helping them out with their book. That’s not just lip-service.

Normally what happens is that you get so familiar with your work, you automatically fill-in-the-blanks yourself. This happens whether it’s your first book or your tenth. And the pressure to finish the book is always there, internal or external, but it’s there. Especially when you’ve been working on it for a few months, or even years. All too often you get tempted to just be done with it and not bother with further editing beyond yourself and your loved ones.

It’s probably better to withstand a little of the pressure to save yourself greater stress (even embarrassment) later on when you’ve finally published and there are little errors that crept into your book like spiders under the sink. And by the tenth read-through they simply became invisible; a part of the book. Save yourself years of regret by going through just a little bit of extra stress right now.

If you’re a professional, experienced writer you can sometimes just work with a copy-editor which is much less time and energy consuming. The editor will simply help you fine-tune and polish up your piece and then, well, you’re done. Go get published!

But perhaps you’re a first-timer or are still not too experienced with your writing. Sometimes you find you need more direct guidance in which case a substantive or developmental editor can help you out much better. They’ll check that your writing flows well, the ideas are coherently presented and that it is well organized.

A good editor will improve the quality of your work to a remarkable degree so make sure that when you find a good editor, you build up a good working relationship with them for future projects as well.

When Have You Edited Enough? August 23rd, 2008

Writing can be complicated. You want your writing to sound good to readers but every time you read it yourself, you’ll find something else you can change or rewrite. In fact, you could easily devote the rest of your life to editing a single article if you are a true perfectionist. The problem is to know when to tell the difference between a bad article that needs a lot of work and a decent article that is sufficient for your needs.

Information Provided

One way to make sure you’ve put together a good article is to examine the content that you’ve included. Ask yourself if there’s any information you have left out that might be helpful to your readers. If you’re not sure what people want to know, do some research and see what types of questions keep popping up.

Check Organization

It’s always a good idea to have some type of outline prepared before you start writing so you can keep everything well organized. Most writers have problems with organization and that’s one of the more tedious things to fix after the fact. So plan ahead of time so you won’t have to worry about major revisions to the rough draft.

Final Edits

After you’ve read through your article one more time for content and to make sure it matches the original outline, go through and edit for spelling and grammar. If you don’t trust yourself, have a handy editor friend who can be your eyes. Remember errors can be a red flag to readers and may turn them away, so don’t forget this important step.

Submission

After you’ve completed all of these steps, you can feel comfortable in submitting your article. Just remember to make sure the article is actually expressing the main message you desire, that it has enough substance to keep readers interested, and that is written in a conversational but authoritative manner.

Consider Pakistan-Based Copywriters August 8th, 2008

In today’s global economy, business has become far more competitive than it was in days past. Businesses have to find ways to keep prices reasonable without sacrificing the quality of the product if they are going to be successful. As a result, many of them are turning to other countries for necessary services.

Like most countries, Pakistan has a long history of copywriting for their own media, whether it is for advertising, marketing, or public relations. The difference between Pakistan and many other countries’ copywriters is that many Pakistani copywriters are not only skilled in their native tongue but also in English. While the English skills of copywriters have always been useful, they are now in greater demand, thanks to the expansion of the Internet and the SEO industry. It’s not enough anymore to just throw together a bunch of filler content and expect to bring traffic to a website. The focus has now shifted to informative, original, and unique content.

Pakistani copywriters do not charge as much as native English-speaking copywriters; it’s a fact and that’s pretty much the bottom line. This is because the exchange rate and the cost of living in Pakistan is low compared to many other countries. If saving money is not reason enough to use their services, consider that most of the copywriters in Pakistan have kept up with innovation so they are not only familiar with traditional writing but also with newer media, including blogging and Adsense.

If you need original content for your website, consider employing a Pakistan-based copywriting service. These hard-working folks’ services won’t cost you as much as a native English speakers’ services, allowing you to have a lot more content created for your dollar. Let’s face it, in today’s economy, saving money is the bottom line.

The Drugs Prescribed to You May Do More Harm Than Good July 14th, 2008

The disturbing facts are out that at least 1.5 million Americans are the victims of being injured, sick or killed errors in prescription drugs. This includes all kinds of errors associated with prescription drugs including prescribing, dosage and dispensing. This is an extremely alarming amount of mistakes that are being made with how people are getting and taking prescription drugs.

Even more alarming, recent studies have indicated that each year the errors created by drugs account for 400,000 injuries that could be prevented, as well as deaths that occur in the hospital. Over 800,000 incidents like this happen like to the elderly in the care of nursing homes or other facilities. And, astonishingly, these numbers continue to rise and problems continue to grow among professionals in the health care industry and facilities.

The disturbing twist to this information is how taking prescription drugs is supposed to be helping the person and improving conditions, but actual findings suggest that an increasing number of people who rely on prescription drugs are actually falling victim to mistakes made by the professionals who provide them.

As if this information was not alarming enough, most hospitals report that they do not always disclose prescription drug errors unless they actually end up causing serious injury or death. Therefore, there could be many more of these mistakes being made that go unreported.

As frustrating as the situation is, there is not a lot that we can do to prevent it from happening. However, we do need to pay more attention to this serious matter and address it. One such way to make it right is to seek legal guidance if you or someone you know has been a victim of malpractice from prescription drug errors.

Malpractice in the Psychiatric Field July 11th, 2008

Those who have been the victim of psychiatric malpractice or who know someone who has, are aware of the implications and repercussions. Mental health care is supposed to be one of the most trusted sources available to those in need and patients put their respect and trust in the hands of those who provide psychiatric care. These problems also frequently ignored or dismissed when patients who have been victims of psychiatric malpractice have gone forward with claims.

For patients with a history of emotional troubles, erratic behavior and other kinds of mental problems seem to be easy targets when it comes to psychiatric malpractice. The stigma of mental illness seems to be a continuing problem that does not allow a lot of room for complaints from mental patients. If you or someone you know thinks they have experienced psychiatric malpractice but are unsure, here are some basic real claims of malpractice you should know about:

• Failure of the practitioner to diagnose the problem

• Failure to treat the problem

• Failure to recognize that the condition is worsening

• Negligent therapy practices

• Abandoning of the patient

• Harmful use of medications

• Failure to correctly monitor medications

• Failure to obtain consent for different therapies, procedures or medications

• Manipulation of emotions

• Fraudulent behavior

• Breach of client confidentiality

• Defamation of character

• Inappropriate use of restraints

• Physical forms of abuse

• Sexual abuse and misconduct

• Failure to stop harm done to self or others

• Inadequate supervision

• Wrongful death suits

• Errors in dosage or type of medications

If you think any of these situations apply to you or someone you know, you need to report them. Psychiatric malpractice is a real problem that needs to be addressed.

Getting To The Top Of Google July 5th, 2008

Mastering the ability to move your Web site to the front of the pack within Google searches is possible. You just have to know what you’re doing.

With a little research, you can find the main words people type in Google when looking for information about a product or place or, really, anything. Those are called keywords.

Find the keywords that best match your site and develop a list of short phrases or words. This will be your keyword list.

Now, look at the list carefully and try to imagine your mom or brother or best friend sitting at their computer using Google to find your site. What would they type in? How would they phrase the words and which words would they use?

Sometimes, those words and phrases aren’t exactly what you wrote down for your keyword list. So, you need to modify your list to better represent the actual language that the average person will use while looking for your site.

Next, look for places to use those keywords in your site, like in headlines, titles, subtitles and inside articles or text on your page – especially at the top of those content pieces.

Write articles or blurbs or blogs that focus on your keywords and link back to your site from those pages.

Once you’ve done all of this, test your site by clicking through all of the links from the pages and from your main Web page.

Google will find those pages and rank it accordingly, using those keywords and the popularity of your site. So, you see, the better job you’ve done matching the keywords to your content or product, the more people will find you.

Then, after they start finding you, Google will note that your popularity is rising and rank your page higher.

Filling your Real Estate Web site with Good Content June 20th, 2008

Filling a real estate Web site with good content is often difficult and challenging.

Since these sites are so rich with information, developing the information to fill them with often takes months for agents and brokers. Without the information, competing with others might not be possible.

Yet, there are resources that can help.

Most agents and brokers do not record their daily business dealings. If they did, the information could be used to develop superb Web site content.

One way to start writing quality information is to pretend, as an agent or broker, that you are speaking with a client contemplating a move. This situation offers a variety of angles for writing.

You might discuss the reasons for buying or selling in the local market, local trends, architecture, how homes differ in price, developing regions, new construction, sections of the city, the economy and real estate, and information about the commercial district.

Most would avoid the chore of writing for their Web site if possible and, amazingly, they can.

There are companies in the market offering copy writing services as well as Web design and development. This allows real estate brokers and agents to focus on their clients rather than having to learn how to put information on a computer

A second option is to strike a deal with a local media outlet to acquire syndicated copy, which can be used on your Web site. This is a successful alternative for many professionals, especially those based in urban areas where owners of news and print operations constantly seek extra revenue.

And, linking your services with the market of an established business, like a newspaper, also will broaden your business potential.

One potential negative is the risk of mistakenly posting duplicate copy on your Web site, which causes search engines to skip your pages and makes it difficult for Internet users to find your real estate site. Avoid this problem by buying exclusive Web rights for the information. Ask the media company if they also plan to post the information on their site. If so, you should pay less.

ONLINE SHOPPING/ SELLING June 11th, 2008

The twenty-first century is really promiscuous and propels us to stay in pace with it. The smartest and most reliable way to shop is online. Don’t you think online shopping is the first preference for all of us, as we are always short of time? Out of a world population of 6,602,224,175, more than 70 % have a basic knowledge about how to use the computer and the Internet. Moreover, schools from around the world are greatly stressing on online shopping and have adopted it as part of their school curricula.

Forget unpleasant and unsuccessful efforts in shopping mails and local stores, and instead check out the endless range of online shopping malls and stores. Is it such a difficult task to log onto the Internet? Certainly not! Splendid offers, special rates, excellent comparison shopping options and discount sales are all available here. Most of your needs and wants can be fulfilled through online shopping; this I guarantee. If you don’t have spare time to ‘hunt’ for the best shops all over town, then free yourself from their clutches and use the Internet!

Payments are made through credit/debit cards. With a click, you can reach thousands of stores and a treasury of shopping material.

However, many people are insecure about entering their personal information on the Internet. Worry not! Safety channels are provided by website hosts to encourage more sales and discourage uncertainty among potential customers. Problems are caused when important information about the product is missing such as a detailed picture, or when inadequate information is provided. Convenience stores and other small supermarkets, that do not possess the necessary finances for launching their website, are at a great disadvantage. They will lose the bulk of future sales.

Another integral aspect of the World Wide Web is selling new or second-hand goods on the Internet. EBay and Amazon are two of the most successful websites and are earning millions by making use of this activity. So, if an old computer, television or even jewelry is being wasted at your home, sell it through the Internet and earn some bucks. Selling and buying with the aid of the World Wide Web is known as e-commerce.

With the latest technology, you have been given a golden opportunity to shop online and feel the pleasure; go and enjoy a truly smart shopping experience!

Find the Summer Jobs That Need Teenagers June 10th, 2008

Are you a teenager looking for a place to work during the summer? If so, try not to pay too much attention to the newspapers and written articles that summer jobs are getting taken up or that most places only hire people who are coming back from the previous summer. There are a lot of options open to a teenager who wants a summer job.

• A good place to start looking for a summer job is all the grocery retailers. Chances are if you land a job at one of these, you can still keep your job when school starts again. If you don’t plan on working while in school, you can arrange to come back the next summer. Talk to managers about this when you apply for jobs. This will make you a much more likely candidate for any job to show willingness to work with them around your schedule.

• Most department stores hire teenagers during the summer. These stores always have seasonal work and summer isn’t the only time. The holidays are open to teens also.

• One the best places a teen could want to work is the local swimming pool. Other recreational places are available too. Amusement parks are another good example. These places seem to be meant for teenagers to work at!

• Landscaping is another job that needs plenty of teenagers during the summer. After all, the grass grows tall! Go around your neighborhood and ask for yard jobs such as cutting the grass or trimming the hedges. You may be surprised at the number of people who would gladly turn the task over to you. And even contract with you for regular summer service.

• Movie theaters are still a good place to search for summer work. The theaters heat up during the summer months due to school being out, and the theaters fill up with kids during the day. Check these out for summer employment.

• Always check with your local stores too. Small businesses that you would never dream would hire a teenager may be the very place you need to go. Places like book stores, specialty shops, and nurseries need summer help too.

• Restaurants are a hot spot for teen jobs all year round. Try these for a summer position.

Looking for a job for anyone, regardless of your age, can be stressful and nerve-wracking. But it would seem more likely for a teenager who is just starting out to have butterflies in the tummy and hand sweats when going on that interview. One thing to remember is that employers are just people, too. The only thing you need to do is dress accordingly. Don’t go a job interview wearing blue jeans with holes in them or sporting the latest Gothic dress and piercings. Just go looking like an average kid who can perform above average on the job and everything will probably go smoothly!
